Our Story and Purpose
The Virta Group derives its name from the
Finnish word for Stream.
Virta is a Kentucky based LLC formed in 2019 to build a scalable wetland banking business.
Founded by John Harkrader, whose passion for the environment and experience as a developer led him to explore the ecological benefits of wetland mitigation banking.
John shared his vision with longtime friends, Chuck Whitlock and Kevin Paley, who bring experience in startups, fundraising, and a deep understanding of technology and environmental markets.
Shortly after the formation of Virta, we purchased our first property in Boone County Kentucky. With work still ahead, our journey to a scaled business model has begun.
